Ice tests at Fraunhofer IFAM

The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Applied Materials Research IFAM in Bremen has a state-of-the-art ice laboratory with integrated wind tunnel. With temperatures down to -30°C and wind speeds of up to 350 km/h, unique working conditions and practical applications can be simulated. By using a water injection system, it is possible to produce different types of clear ice and rough ice in the wind tunnel.

Since ice load detection is an important application area of the ASTROSE system, the new generation of wireless sensor nodes was successfully tested in this laboratory, especially with regard to their radio characteristics.
